The Potomac Undercity (1994 CE)
Representation of regions of the Undercity as seen by the Player Characters thus far as of December 8, 1994.
The Undercity is home to the bulk of the Nosferatu Clan of the region, all of the Moravignians, tens of thousands of ghouled beasts (some more recognizable to taxonomists than others), quite a few human ghouls, and other creatures only whispered of. Henry even heard tale of a rotting corpse undead creature who was a capable thanatologist, yet had nowhere else to practice his grizzly arts.
The One Below, the Prince, Caius, is the undisputed ruler of the Undercity . . . treated with semi-divine status by the communists. The Moravignian seers serve as a priesthood class, requiring harvested mushrooms for their magics. The Shepherds and Beastmasters tend to the flocks of creatures and keep the Spawning Pool stocked. The Operatives train for missions topside in the smoothskin lands to bring back resources, gather information and serve diplomatic functions to Camarilla society. The Gardeners work in the Underforest to gather fungus for the Moravignians’ blood rituals. The Architects delve ever deeper into the earth, creating great works of art and engineering marvels unseen in the lands above. And the Node Operator computer scientists of ShreckNet build the web of information ever wider.
The most obvious, yet most closely watched, entrance to the Undercity is through the Metro system that runs through Maryland, Virginia and D.C. There you will find entrances to the Upper Warrens, and only a dangerous route to progress further down. The Upper Warrens are home to a trusted few Nosferatu tasked with procuring ghouls and tending to the human “flock” of social misfits and castoffs who make up the Nosferatu herd.
The most trusted entrances to the Deep Undercity are found elsewhere, however, as a closely-guarded secret of the Clan. Select sub-basements of topside buildings have entrances to the Warrens of the topside Operatives. The specialist Nosferatu agents who live there make their homes the closest to the surface of any in the Clan and serve as the “face” of the brood to the outside world.
Below the Upper Warrens is the dreaded Antechamber. It is filled with traps and creatures, all the better to deter any interlopers into the Deep. If one passes from the Operatives’ Warrens or somehow survived the Antechamber (or were let through), the next region you would see would be the Chamber of Horrors. This area is not at all what it sounds like: there are arcade games, pool, comfortable couches, a media room and the camaraderie of the residents of the Undercity (a theater was being built further below, but the Architect Cheesehead was unable to finish it before he died). Below this area, one must take punts and skiffs of wood in the tunnels of raw sewage to get to deeper areas.
There is a great “lake” below, from where one might travel in any direction. There are a series of tiny islets of debris dotting the mottled sea. From here, there is a so-called “Cloak Room” where newly-turned fledglings are locked in to go through the week of torment that is the Nosferatu change.
Taking a skiff down the central line will lead to a dock at the Court of Darkness. The underpalace is made of fine-hewn stone of masterwork craftsmanship. The Court consists of the Moravignian seers, elder Nosferatu of the brood (such as the childer and grandchilder of Caius) and those with reason to report there. The most sacred chamber in the Court, however, is the audience room with the worshipped “One Below.” The room is a simple dark chamber of stone with holes in the floor, walls and ceiling. Upon being granted an audience, the supplicant stands upon a giant clan symbol hewn into the stone below as slimy and furry creatures of all sort pour out of the holes around the often terrified Nosferatu. They form a multi-being of a humanoid “face” ten feet tall which begins to “speak” in Latin with the voice of thousands of hisses of snakes and squeaks of rats and guttural howls of other vermin. The entity’s Chamberlain, Darius, translates for the neonate as they are sorted into a caste.
Below the Court, the water-filled tunnels are lit with millions of festive Christmas lights pilfered from above. The Undercity was electrified a few years ago, though there are areas more reliable than others.
The Moravignians have their coven in chambers near the Court, though few have ever been in there with them as they practice their dark blood magics and scrying.
There is a Bestiary where the most prized ghoul animals are kept, fed and trained for the defense of the Commune.
There is a Gallery with art of both impeccable taste stolen from the Smithsonian above as well as more . . . niche . . . pieces made by the great artists of the Nosferatu. There is a large symphony chamber with strange pipe instruments clanged upon to make haunting noises unknown in the world above.
The Spawning Pool is overseen by the Shepard of the Deep and his helpers. They keep the ghouled animals fed and their forced evolution . . . managed. Among their ranks are neonates who were up-and-coming geneticists, entomologists, zoologists, et cetera.
The massive Underforest is a chamber carved out of the bedrock below Alexandria over decades. The Gardeners have grown over whole human lifetimes new species of mushrooms, some grown the height of trees, all fed by vampiric vitae and made possible through some form of magic known only to the Moravignians. It is for their benefit that this whole rung of society toils: for the Moravignians require large amounts of harvested mature mushroom clippings as an essential ingredient in their Blood Sorcery.
The Lower Warrens house the majority of the Clan in cozy stone-hewn and cells, complete with electricity . . . most of the time.
Below this is the depths, De Profudis. There were terrible rumors of a Beast below, but things have escalated . . .
